Sunset Park runs from the waterfront up the hill to the park that gives the neighborhood its name. Most homes are row houses, many of them split into two or three apartments, plus apartment buildings near the avenues. Some side streets are steep, the avenues are busy with shops, and the Gowanus Expressway runs above Third Avenue. All of that shapes how moving day goes.
Landmarked row-house blocks
On June 18, 2019, the Landmarks Preservation Commission designated four historic districts in Sunset Park (NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission: four historic districts in Sunset Park (2019)):
- Sunset Park North: about 56 buildings on the south side of 44th Street between 5th and 7th Avenues, with limestone- and brick-fronted houses and apartment houses.
- Central Sunset Park: about 148 buildings on 47th and 48th Streets between 5th and 6th Avenues, and along 6th Avenue, built from 1897 to 1906.
- Sunset Park 50th Street: two rows of 25 houses with brownstone fronts on 50th Street between 4th and 5th Avenues, built from 1897 to 1903.
- Sunset Park South: about 285 buildings on 54th through 59th Streets between 4th and 5th Avenues, mostly late-19th-century row houses.
Row houses like these mean a stoop, a narrow hall and a staircase with tight turns. If you live on an upper floor, measure the stair turns and send us photos of your large pieces with your estimate request.
Hills, stoops and long carries
When the closest legal parking spot is up or down the block, the crew carries farther, and on a slope that takes more time. Tell us if your block is steep or if there is a long walk from the curb to your door. It helps us plan the crew and the day.
- Keep the stoop, the hall and the stairs clear the night before.
- Use small boxes for books and kitchen items. They are safer to carry on narrow stairs.
- In a house with several apartments, label each box with the room and the floor.
- Take photos of anything that might not fit and send them to us early.
Truck routes in Sunset Park
A moving truck has to follow New York City’s truck routes. Under the city’s traffic rules, a truck with a stop in Brooklyn may leave the truck route only at the intersection nearest its stop, go the most direct way to the door, and then return the most direct way to the nearest truck route (NYC Rules: adopted truck route rule, 34 RCNY 4-13, effective October 4, 2026 (PDF)). The Brooklyn list was last updated on October 4, 2026 (NYC DOT: truck route changes effective October 4, 2026 (PDF)).
The listed truck routes here include Third Avenue (from Atlantic Avenue to 65th Street), Fourth Avenue (only from Flatbush Avenue to 39th Street), Second Avenue, First Avenue between 39th and 58th Streets, and cross streets such as 39th Street, 43rd Street, 58th Street, 60th Street and 65th Street (NYC Rules: adopted truck route rule, 34 RCNY 4-13, effective October 4, 2026 (PDF)). Fifth Avenue in Sunset Park is not on the list, and neither is Fourth Avenue south of 39th Street. If you live on one of those blocks, the truck leaves the nearest listed route and takes the most direct way to you.
The October 4, 2026 changes added Second Avenue between 29th Street and 58th Street, and 29th Street between Second and Third Avenues, to the truck route network (NYC DOT: truck route changes effective October 4, 2026 (PDF)). If you live near the waterfront, the truck may now approach on a different street than before.
Parking and the curb
On the shopping avenues, curb space is short during business hours, and delivery trucks compete for it. A morning start often gives the truck a better chance of a legal spot close to your door. On side streets, check the alternate side parking calendar: on days when street cleaning rules are suspended, parked cars often stay all day (NYC DOT: alternate side parking calendar).
- Walk your block a week ahead and note hydrants, bus stops, driveways and parking signs.
- Ask your landlord whether the front door can stay open during loading.
- Change your address with USPS before the move (USPS: change your address).
Questions we hear
Are Sunset Park row houses landmarked?
Some are. In 2019 the Landmarks Preservation Commission designated four historic districts in Sunset Park. For a move, the main thing is protecting stoops, railings and doors.
Can a moving truck drive on Fifth Avenue in Sunset Park?
Only to reach a stop there. Fifth Avenue in Sunset Park is not a listed truck route, so the truck leaves the nearest route and goes the most direct way to your door.
Did truck routes change in Sunset Park in 2026?
Yes. Since October 4, 2026, Second Avenue between 29th and 58th Streets and 29th Street between Second and Third Avenues are truck routes.
