Summer is the busiest moving season in New York City — and also the hottest. A July move can mean 90-degree heat, humid stairwells, and a crew and family that tire fast. With a little planning, though, a summer move can be smooth and safe. Here are the hot-weather moving tips we use at Two Guys And a Truck across the five boroughs.
Move Early in the Day
The single best summer moving tip: start at sunrise. An early-morning slot means you do the heavy lifting before the midday heat peaks. It’s cooler, traffic is lighter, and curb space is easier to find. Aim to have the truck loaded before noon whenever possible.
Stay Hydrated and Take Breaks
- Stock a cooler with water and electrolyte drinks — keep it by the door, not packed away.
- Take short, regular breaks in the shade or in air conditioning.
- Watch for heat exhaustion: dizziness, headache, or nausea means stop and cool down immediately.
- Wear light clothing, a hat, and closed-toe shoes with good grip.
Protect Heat-Sensitive Items
A closed moving truck can top 120°F inside on a hot day. Some items don’t handle that well:
- Electronics: extreme heat can damage screens and batteries — carry laptops and consoles in your own air-conditioned car if you can.
- Candles & cosmetics: they melt — bag them so they don’t ruin other boxes.
- Houseplants: never leave them in a hot truck; move them in your car.
- Vinyl records & media: warp in the heat — keep them out of direct sun.
Keep Both Homes Comfortable
If possible, keep the AC running at both your old and new place on moving day, and prop doors with fans to move air through hot hallways. A cool space to retreat to keeps everyone’s energy up — and a tired crew makes more mistakes.
Book Early — Summer Fills Up Fast
May through September is peak season, and the best crews and dates get reserved weeks ahead. Book as early as you can, especially for end-of-month and weekend moves, to lock in your preferred time and pricing.
